Description

Carefully carved, this reliquary guardian of Byeri displays the particularities of the Ntoumou of northern Gabon, which however have many variations. The figure is armed with a torque, bracelets on the wrists and ankles, and a staple is inserted on the forehead, the metal being endowed, for many African tribes, with apotropaic virtues. The head of a great sobriety is capped with the traditional pointed helmet, the two small eyes schematized by two brass pupils are inscribed under the broad curved forehead, and the half-open mouth advances in pout.

We find the Fang people in central Africa, south of Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, few in the Republic of Congo.
